Do I Qualify?
Residents or property owners of Southfield or Lathrup Village are eligible for a Southfield Public Library Card. This card may also be used at any of The Library Network (TLN) libraries that have reciprocal borrowing agreements with Southfield.
Residents of communities with reciprocal borrowing agreements must use their hometown library card at the Southfield Public Library.
Residents of non-reciprocal communities who work or attend school in Southfield or Lathrup Village may qualify for a library card that can only be used at the Southfield Public Library.
What ID You Need To Get A New Account?
RESIDENTS:
When applying for a new Library account, please bring the following valid ID to verify your home residency.
- One piece of ID must be a valid Michigan Driver’s License or State ID card.
- One piece must be a current official document showing your name and current home address, such as:
- Michigan Car Registration
- Car Insurance Certificate
- Utility Bill (within 30 days)
- Bank Statement (within 30 days)
- Credit Card Bill (within 30 days)
- Lease Agreement (within 12 months)
- Property Tax Receipt (within 12 months)
Eligible NON-RESIDENTS:
A). Do you live in a reciprocal community?
When applying for a new Library account, please bring your hometown Library card and:
- One piece of ID must be a valid Michigan Driver’s License or State ID card.

B). Do you live in a non-reciprocal community, but WORK or attend SCHOOL in Southfield or Lathrup Village?
If you WORK in Southfield or Lathrup Village:
- Please bring a pay stub dated within the past 30 days.
- If your paystub does not show a Southfield or Lathrup Village business address, you may bring a letter on company letterhead (showing a Southfield or Lathrup Village business address) signed by your supervisor stating you are currently employed at the location.
If you attend SCHOOL in Southfield or Lathrup Village:
- If you are in grades K-12, please bring a current report card.
- If you are over the age of 18, please bring a current transcript of classes or tuition receipt.
- One piece of ID must be a valid Michigan Driver's License or State ID card.
- One piece must be a current official document showing your name and current home address, such as:
- Michigan Car Registration
- Car Insurance Certificate
- Utility Bill (within 30 days)
- Bank Statement (within 30 days)
- Credit Card Bill (within 30 days)
- Lease Agreement (within 12 months)
- Property Tax Receipt (within 12 months)
When It's Time To Renew Your Account:
Resident accounts expire every year on your birthday. To renew, please bring your library card plus a valid Michigan Driver's License or Michigan State ID card.
Accounts from reciprocal libraries expire every year on your birthday. To renew, please bring your hometown library card plus a valid Michigan State ID card.
Work accounts expire every year on your birthday. To renew, please bring your library card, current official work documment* plus your valid Michigan Driver's License or Michigan State ID card.
School accounts expire according to school schedules. Please check with staff for expiration date. To renew, please bring your library card, current official school document* plus your valid Michigan Driver’s License or Michigan State ID card.
Your Responsibilities As a Library Card Holder Are:
- To assume financial responsibility for all materials checked out with your Library card, including paying for lost or damaged materials, overdue fines and processing fees.
- Fines and fees not paid within the prescribed period of time may be sent to a collection agency.
- To give immediate notice of a lost or stolen Library card. Your Library card should be treated like a credit card, because anyone who uses it has access to your library record and borrowing privileges.
- To notify the Library of any change of address, phone number or e-mail address.
- To abide by the policies of the Library and the Library’s Code of Conduct. Responsibility for the choice of borrowed materials rests with the cardholder or, if under the age of 18, with the cardholder’s parent.
