Library Cards
  • Eligibility:

Any individual who lives, works, owns property, or attends school in Southfield or Lathrup Village is eligible for a Southfield Public Library card. A child of any age can obtain a library card (if they can print their full name); however, a parent or legal guardian's signature is required for anyone under the age of 18. The parent / legal guardian MUST accompany the child when they apply for a card.

  • Obtaining a Card:

Library cards are issued at the  Circulation Desk.  Eligible Southfield and Lathrup Village residents are required to furnish address verification. Examples are: driver's license or state-issued ID card*. Eligible non-residents are required to provide two types of address verification. Some examples are: personalized business card with Southfield / Lathrup Village company name AND address, letter or reference from employer on company letterhead or a recent (within last 3 months) pay stub with name AND address of Southfield / Lathrup Village company*. Additionally, non-residents will need to furnish verification of their HOME address. Examples are: any of the items listed previously if complete home address is also listed, valid driver's license, or valid state-issued ID. Once your address has been verified, your card will be issued in a matter of minutes.

(*Other forms of identification are also accepted, please call the library at (248) 796-4200 for information.)

  • Renewing a Card:

All cards are valid for one year with renewal scheduled on the cardholder's birthday. Bring your card and valid identification to either the Circulation Desks. You will be asked to show your ID and verify the information in the database. Your card will be renewed within a few minutes.

  • Lost Card:

If you lose your library card you are required to call the library (248-796-4200) and report the card lost. If you do not report the lost card, any materials checked out on the card are your responsibility. There is a $2.00 replacement fee for a lost card.

  • Temporary Card:

If you are a resident of a community whose Library is part of  The Library Network,  you may use your library card at the Southfield Public Library. If you do not have a library card from your home library, we may issue you a temporary card. This card is valid for 30 days.

  • Checking Out Materials:

In order to check out materials you must present your library card at the circulation desk.
